Visit the yard

Buy compost, soil and mulch, drop off yard and tree waste, or pick up your Compost Club compost. All of it happens at the Downtown Omaha yard. No appointment needed. The Ashland compost farm is for commercial customers by appointment, and it's covered at the bottom of this page.

Finding the yard

Fair warning: GPS alone probably won't get you to the gate. Follow these four steps instead.

1

Head toward the airport

From downtown Omaha, take Abbott Drive north toward Eppley Airfield.

2

Turn right on Avenue H

It's a small turn and easy to pass. Slow down after the river bridge.

3

Take the first immediate right

Right after you turn onto Avenue H.

4

Drive to the end of the road

The yard is at the end. Pull in and check in with the crew.

A one-minute drive-in from Abbott Drive to the gate.

When you arrive

Skid steer loading compost into the bed of a red pickup at the Soil Dynamics yard

We load your truck

Pickups and trailers get loaded with the skid steer. A half-ton pickup carries about a yard of mulch or half a yard of soil or compost.

Compost pouring from a loader bucket

Or bring your own containers

Buckets, bags, totes, or a tarp to line your trunk. Shovels are on site. Any amount is fine, even a few buckets.

Already a Compost Club member or Gretna Sanitation customer?

Your food scraps and yard waste helped make what's in the piles, so part of this yard is already yours. Here's what you get and how to claim it.

Compost Club members

  • 3 cubic feet of any soil blend, compost or mulch, included with your membership. That's about three 5-gallon buckets. You can also donate your credits to a community garden.
  • 20% off any compost, soil or mulch, any time of year, in any amount.
  • Unlimited yard waste drop-off. Bagged yard waste can be left outside the gate next to the Compost Club carts if we're closed.
  • Curbside members: bring tree limbs and bulky yard waste free of charge.

To redeem, come during open hours, tell the crew you're a Compost Club member, and say what you'd like. Step by step on the Hillside blog

Soil Dynamics Compost Farm, Ashland

Commercial customers only, by appointment

16494 292nd Street, Ashland, NE 68003
Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm · (402) 332-4710 ext. 5

This is the working farm where Nebraska yard waste, tree limbs and wood become compost and mulch, next to the Wildlife Safari Park where Andy Harpenau started composting Gretna Sanitation's yard waste in 2011. There are no retail sales here. Contractors can pick up bulk product by appointment, and we host tours for schools, businesses and community groups.

Directions: I-80 to exit 426, head south. Left on 292nd Street toward the Wildlife Safari Park. The first right is the park entrance and the second is the park exit; take the third right. Follow the rock road past the compost piles and keep right until you reach the building.

Wear closed-toe shoes. It's a composting site, so expect some odor, dust and heavy equipment. Stay with your host.
